Drifting Beyond: Light, Delta Frequencies, and the Out-of-Body Experience

Young man experiencing an OBE

One moment you are in your body. The next, you are not. Or at least, that is how it feels. You are above, beside, floating through walls or seeing yourself from angles you never imagined. These are the telltale impressions of an out-of-body experience, or OBE, a phenomenon as old as human consciousness and yet still perched at the edge of scientific understanding.

In recent years, a new tool has quietly joined the long list of catalysts for these uncanny adventures. Light. Specifically, rhythmic flashing light tuned to brainwave frequencies. And among the various techniques that can facilitate altered states, light-based brainwave entrainment has emerged as one of the most intriguing and sometimes surprising paths toward stepping outside oneself.

At Lightbath, we did not set out to make an OBE machine. The Loom was designed for deep relaxation, enhanced focus, and heightened creativity. But something fascinating kept happening, particularly in sessions using the delta program. People reported sensations that felt like lifting, floating, even separating. They were not hallucinating. They were lucid. And they were, according to their own inner compass, not quite in their bodies anymore.

The Light That Lures You Out

Let us start with how this works. The Loom uses pulsed light at specific frequencies to synchronize with your brainwaves. It is a gentle push, like someone nudging a swing already in motion. The delta mode, pulsing at around one to three hertz, mirrors the slowest natural brain rhythms, the kind your brain generates during deep, dreamless sleep. When you are exposed to these frequencies with eyes closed, the brain tends to follow. Not into sleep necessarily, but into the liminal zone that lies just beneath the threshold of waking consciousness.

This is fertile ground for unusual experiences. The mind is deeply relaxed, the body begins to feel weightless, and sensory information becomes quiet. In that stillness, the brain sometimes projects itself elsewhere. The boundaries between the self and the physical container become blurry. Some users feel themselves tilting, spinning, or pulling upward. Others find themselves observing the room from an impossible angle. And some simply drop into a warm black void, hovering in what can only be described as a space without dimension.

Unlike more intense psychedelic states, this kind of light-induced detachment feels strangely soft. There is no rush, no disorientation. Only a quiet slipping, like drifting out to sea on a calm tide.

Accidental Astral Travel

Not everyone sets out to have an out-of-body experience. In fact, many Lightbath users report their first one by accident. They start a delta session expecting deep rest or a meditative break, only to find themselves outside the framework of their usual awareness.

One user, who had never tried meditation before, described it as falling backward out of my head. Another said she felt as if my consciousness detached from my skin. These are not dream states. They are hyper-real. And while OBEs might sound fantastical, they are not as rare as you might think. One 2016 study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found that up to ten percent of people report having had at least one in their lifetime. And that is without flashing lights designed to lower brainwave frequencies into the subterranean realm of delta.

Tips for First-Time Explorers

If you are curious or if you find yourself unexpectedly adrift, there are a few simple pointers that can help navigate the experience.

First, do not panic. The body remains safe, even if your awareness has slipped beyond it. It is common to feel a mild jolt or snap back when the mind becomes startled. Trust that you are still grounded. The experience is happening within the field of your consciousness, not outside the laws of biology.

Second, allow yourself to explore. Try moving your awareness gently. Shift your attention to the left or right. Do not force anything. Most OBEs respond poorly to pressure or expectations. Like a dream, the more you chase it, the more it slips.

Third, stay present with the sensations. You might notice vibrations, a rushing sound, or a feeling of expansion. These are normal. They are signs that your brain is in a highly receptive state. The delta rhythm may also cause time to dilate, giving you the sense of having been gone for hours even if only a few minutes have passed.

And finally, consider keeping a journal. Writing about the experience not only helps process it but can also act as a grounding ritual if the sensations felt a little too unfamiliar.

Why This Matters

The science of OBEs is still developing. Some researchers argue they are merely the brain’s way of processing certain neurological or psychological states. Others believe they point to more mysterious properties of consciousness. Regardless of the explanation, the experiences themselves can be deeply transformative. They often leave users with a sense of awe, perspective, and even comfort.

In therapeutic contexts, OBEs have been linked to reduced fear of death, increased creativity, and emotional healing. They offer a brief glimpse of selfhood beyond the body, a kind of spiritual weightlessness that is difficult to explain and impossible to forget.

We do not yet know exactly why delta light encourages these states, but the pattern is becoming harder to ignore. The Loom’s most tranquil mode, designed originally for sleep support and meditative unwinding, may also be a quiet invitation to step beyond the body. Whether taken deliberately or stumbled into by surprise, it opens the door to a deeper, more mysterious dimension of self.

The Threshold Awaits

There is a long history of humans seeking ways to step outside themselves. From fasting and chanting to psychedelics and lucid dreaming, the impulse to transcend the physical form is a thread woven through every culture.

What is new is the idea that technology, minimal, beautiful, rhythmic, can gently guide us toward that same frontier.

No incantations. No guru. Just light. Just rhythm. And the willingness to close your eyes, let go, and float.
